Conciousness and Humanity in Check

Breaking the Spell of Social Media

I’m reluctant to believe that social networks allow you to build knowledge. Do not take me wrong, they are great tools for spreading the word and connecting with people. Nonetheless, their nature is to keep you hooked, not to facilitate deep learning. They are designed to keep you scrolling, not to keep you thinking or aware.

On top of that, these platforms suffer changes along the way with their policies, and you are at the mercy of their algorithms. They can delete your account or shadow ban you for unknown reasons. The list of downsides is very long and I don’t think it’s necessary to go through them.

When it comes to learning -having an enriched and meaningful experience- we have to confess that most of the time spent on these platforms is passive scrolling.

Consciousness and Humanity in Check

Are you an NPC? Are you programmed to do this? Are you in control of your actions/thoughts? I don’t want to get trascendental with this but this questions should pop in our heads once in a while.

It seems that passive content consumption is distracting us from connecting with our true selves and with the world around us.

Whatever distracts us from unfolding our human potential in a natural way must be handled with care.

We stopped feeling ourselves. We fear being quiet and finding ourselves, or rather, we fear not finding ourselves and just listen to the echo of the algorithm in our heads.

Scrolling has taken away the silence to fill our minds with a stream of cheap stimuli.

The Scaffolding Pipeline

Rather than relying on direct translation, we can scaffold comprehension using several pathways:

  • Multimodal Cues: Anchoring words to physical movement and environmental triggers.
  • Interactive Scaffolding: Designing custom digital assets (like H5P) that let students discover syntax inductively.
  • Relational Safety: Creating spaces where students are not afraid of making mistakes, keeping their anxiety low.

By focusing on acquisition rather than declarative rule-learning, language ceases to be a subject and becomes a living bridge of connection.
